Wood…Works

This October in the Pre-Access Science class, we are learning all about wood! Where does it come from? How does it feel? How can we use it? All our questions will be answered in the coming weeks!

To start our new topic, we began by looking at wood around us in our everyday lives. We spoke about how all the tables, chairs, floor, doors, and even pencils at school contain wood! Even some of our favourite toys, like the train tracks and kitchen area are made of wood!

We can find wood everywhere around us, but where does it come from? Today we learnt about how trees are cut down, shipped, cleaned, and prepared ahead of being used for building! We also learnt about how carpenters use different tools to shape the wood and make it into things we recognise today! As well as discussing this, we even watched a video to show us examples of it happening in real time!

After taking in all this new information, it was time to put our Scientific knowledge to the test!  For our first activity, pupils had to recognise which object was made from wood and differentIate it from another material. Our second activity involved us finding wood objects around us, writing down their name, their use, and drawing a picture to accompany it. Finally, we had a quiz to consolidate all our learning, testing everything we knew about wood!

Well done everyone. See you next time!
