Pencil Air Hockey!

In today’s lesson, we learnt all about wood. We spoke together as a class and discussed all the wood we could see around us. We also recapped some ideas from last week as we spoke about how we use wood every day.

Everyone did great to recap the ways we use tables, chairs, kitchen tools, doors, clocks, and pencils! At school, we use pencils every day! We know that we can sharpen and write with pencils, but do know where they come from and how they are made? Today, we found out!

We learnt about how pencils were made in factories using wood from trees. We even learnt about how the wood needs to be hard enough to sharpen, but not so soft that it breaks easily! After learning about how pencils are manufactured and seeing a video of the process, it was now time for us to use our pencils – but not to write! In today’s lesson, we used our pencils to create a mini game of air hockey!

After learning the rules of air hockey, everyone took it in turn to use a pencil as their stick and use a disk of wood as the puck. Students played a head to head game of winner-stays-on in a tournament style, seeing who is the pencil air hockey champion in the class! It was great to have some friendly competition in the class and see everyone cheer on their friends and teammates!

Well done everyone, keep up the great work! See you next time!
