Checkmate!

This week in Social Studies class, we learned about one of the most popular board games in the world, Chess.

Chess emerged in Europe in the 15th century after evolving from earlier forms of the game in India and Persia. It is a game of strategy unlike the luck-based games that we played such as Candy Land.

We introduced the chessboard to the students and the different pieces. We also discussed the objective of the game — to checkmate your opponent’s king.

We weren’t sure of the rules, so at first we had fun moving the pieces around the board.

Then one boy, who plays chess on his father’s iPad, began teaching us how to play. He taught us the rules for how each piece can move, and we became playing the game more seriously.

Thank you, grandmaster!!

The students would like to play chess again. If we practice, perhaps we can become grandmasters too!
