Salt Detectives

We began our new Science Pre-Access topic today and learnt all about salt. To begin our lesson, we started by talking about what salt is and how we can use it. Many of us knew that salt can we eaten with some of our favourite foods, but we didn’t know how else it could be used or where salt comes from!

As well as for eating, pupils were amazed to learn that salt can be used for cleaning, purification, de-icing, and much more. We also learnt that there are many different types of salt! We learnt about table salt, rock salt, sea salt. We also learnt about how these salts will look under a microscope and how they look like crystals.

After discussing the use of salts, we learnt about where salt comes from. It was interesting to hear the pupil’s ideas of where they thought salt comes from. We spoke about the different places salt can come from, including the ocean, salt flats, and even underground! We watched a video to see these different places and ways salt can be collected.

For today’s activity, we took it in turns to investigate and observe three different materials. We used a magnifying glass to look closely and figure out which of the three materials was actually salt. One was sticky rice, one was sugar, and one was table salt. After investigating, everyone shared their ideas with their partners and then the whole class. Well done to the people who found the salt correctly!

Good job everyone, you will all be salt experts soon!
