Comfy Cotton

In today’s Pre Access Science, we began our new monthly topic as we began looking at Fantastic Fabrics! We looked at a range of different fabrics and how they are used, but today we focussed in on cotton.

We discussed how cotton was all around us in everyday items, but did you know it is actually a plant? Pupils shared their ideas with one another to discuss which items in their homes had cotton. They came up with some great ideas, from shirts, to towels, to jackets, and even pillows!

In class, we took turns to touch, examine, and share four different types of cotton! Some were soft, some were stretchy, and some were light. As a group, we all spoke together about what each different type of cotton could be used for.

But how does the cotton change from a plant into the clothes and items we have today? We watched a video to see how the many different machines make the cotton stronger and thinner, as well as how it is coloured and made into patterns. After the video, we had a quick test and discussed what we learnt. We were amazed to learn that the average T-shirt is made from only 35 cotton balls!

Wow, what an amazing fabric! I can’t wait to see what we will learn about next time!

Great work everyone, see you soon!
