Weighing It Up

Today, we began July’s new Pre Access science topic; Weight. We opened the topic by learning the key vocabulary; ‘Heavy’, ‘Light’, and ‘Scale’. After understanding these words, we began to use them in sentences as we discussed the weight of different items. Pupils were great at thinking of abstract items they thought were either light or heavy!

Our students were great at using their scientific skills to predict which of the items would be heavy and which would be light! Even though some items were smaller than others, pupils were able to understand that the size didn’t necessarily reflect the item’s weight! A great example of this was how an elephant is much heavier than a hot air balloon, even though it’s far smaller! The pupils were even able to assess two given items and compare them against each other!

As well as completing a worksheet to show this, we did a practical experiment using the real items around us. Every pupil was tasked with finding an object in the classroom, using the digital scales to weigh it, and then put the results into a sequence; from the lightest items to the heaviest items. We even found an unexpected anomaly among the experiment’s results as some of the items were even too heavy for the scale!

Well done everybody, your science skills are growing week on week!  Keep up the hard work, keep on weighing!
