Properties of Wood!

  1. In today’s lesson, we concluded our monthly Science topic about wood. We discussed together all the different properties of wood. It can be strong, light, durable, heated, and made into so many different things! Everyone in the class was able to contribute towards our discussion and give examples of how wood is used.

In teams, we played a quick game to recap our key vocabulary. We then used these words to create sentences about wood and how it’s used. We then continued our lesson to learn all about different types of wood!

We took it in turns to look at, touch, and pass around different types of wood. Pupils were challenged to guess what each type of wood is used for! Some pupils came up with great and imaginative ideas! We decided that our favourite type of wood was the sawdust because it was light and felt nice.

After this, we conducted a science experiment together to see the benefits of using a wooden spoon over a plastic or metal one. We took it in turns to put the three different types of spoons into a glass of hot water and a glass of cold water. After placing the forks into the water, we felt the temperature of the forks and then compared the results! We learnt that the metal fork conducted the heat very well, making it difficult to use when cooking! Pupils decided that the wooden fork avoided becoming too hot, and therefore was very useful for cooking!

Amazing work scientists! Well done everyone, keep it up! See you next time!
